The paintings of Kanako Tada consist of mainly portraits. From fashion magazines to weekly journals and art catalogues, she selects the models of her work. Yet her figures rarely have a face. It is often hard to tell if the original model was a man or a woman, a foreigner or of typical Japanese features, their very expression being withheld from the viewer. Rather than being intend upon replicating the original image, Tada is more concerned with melting forms and expressions. Here she searches out to something beyond the surface of facial patterns and calls upon the voice of herself and her subjects.
