Jouy-en-Josas is a town in the southwest suburbs of Paris near Versailles. The European chintz crafted at the factories in this area is called “Toile de Jouy,” widely known as traditional fabrics from France. In full cooperation with the Musée de la Toile de Jouy, this exhibition will be the first full-scale opportunity in Japan to see the world of Toile de Jouy. Tracing back the origin of this textile’s symbolic pastoral motifs to tapestries in Flanders and introducing the world of Indian chintz that caused a sensation in Europe and Japan, the exhibition guides its visitors to the elegant and delightful world of Toile de Jouy causing them to be captivated by the Europeans of that time including Marie Antoinette.
