“Digital Shamanism” presents projects in a series combining Japanese folk beliefs and technology. The Digital Shaman Project develops robots programmed with the expressions, mannerisms, and other physical traits of the deceased, offering a new way of mourning by sending the robots to stay with surviving family members for the ceremonial 49 days following the person’s passing. The “Namahage in Tokyo” project, a collaboration with ISID Innolab, takes an interest in celebrations and festivals as an expression of human vitality with a focus on the Namahage Festival from Oga, Akita Prefecture.
