The word “landscape” has various meanings, the classic use of the word often pertaining to the tradition of landscape painting in Western Europe, rather than natural landscapes per se. In the nineteenth century, landscape paintings became independent from their religious background and started to be recognized as an important genre in their own right. When landscape photography appeared thereafter, it was based on the concepts of the painting genre. With this, landscape paintings and landscape photography began being influenced by each other and taking on a variety of expressions. With the art of CG, the boundary separating the two distinct media completely disappeared.
This exhibition will invite viewers to compare landscape paintings and photographs that share the same gallery space. Landscape paintings embody mental phenomena rooted in the author’s mind that are expressed through descriptive visual subjects, hinting at the internal and external relationship between the artist and nature. Meanwhile landscape photography also searches out core expression while accepting the reality of a scene, this time through light. The means may be different, but the aim of both media is the same. See how these artists manifest something invisible in the visible.
