Robert Doisneau
Many people have seen Robert Doisneau’s famous photograph titled “Kiss by the Town Hall” without knowing who it was taken by. It was shot for “Life” magazine in 1950 and became known throughout the world when it was released as a poster in the 1980s. It would not be an exaggeration to say that this image of his is now symbolic of France, the country of love, in an era when it was rare to see lovers kiss on the street. It created the idea of Paris as a city of lovers, something that is fondly admired by many. Doisneau produced numerous masterpieces throughout his lifetime, capturing everyday Paris street scenes, inhabited by children and lovers, with humor and satire.
Featuring previously unissued photographs and video archives as well as interviews with his friends and partners in crime, documentary “Robert Doisneau: Through the Lens” tells how the kid from the poor suburbs turned superstar photographer. It draws the intimate portrait of the life and work – being so closely interwoven – of an artist fiercely determined to be a purveyor of happiness.
