Tokyo Photographic Art Museum

Email, the spread of the Internet, the violation of personal rights, the protection of personal information, communication disorders, and solitary death are all phenomena that have emerged predominantly during the Heisei period (1989-). Methods of communication with others, and the distance we place between them or objects and ourselves, have changed and become increasingly complex. Photography, as a medium, is achieved through direct confrontation with a subject, be it an actual person, object, landscape or event, necessitating some kind of interaction or communication between photographer and subject. This exhibition will look at what artists capture and try to express when creating a photographic work under such circumstances, while simultaneously considering the changes that have occurred in the relationships between both artist and subject and artist and viewer. It will introduce numerous contemporary works selected from the museum’s collection of over 34,000 works.

The ‘TOP Collection’ is an annual series of three exhibitions around a common theme that changes each year that introduces works from the museum collection. The theme of this series, the first since the museum was re-opening following rennovation, is ‘Heisei,’ referring to the years from 1989 to the present.
