Many of Japan’s vital scientific research centers are concentrated in Tsukuba. With the cooperation of the University of Tsukuba’s world-class Research Unit for Art and Technology, this exhibition presents an opportunity for visitors to see and experience the world of art and science together.

The centerpiece of this exhibition, the experiential media art piece “Hero Heroine” uses hero poses taken in studio with images taken in real time and combines them to create a “hero/heroine experience for the visitor. This completely new work uses special effects and animation techniques researched by the performance group Grinder-Man. From France, Pascal Haudressy is exhibiting his work “Heart”. The “heart” displayed on the monitor looks as if it is beating rhythmically but its timing is actually of due to a bug in the program. The work explores the organic and accidental in something that is meant to be inorganic and regular.

This year, a part of the exhibit will leave the museum space and exhibit at Tsukuba Station. Takuro Osaka’s “Angle-Transmission and Reflection” consists of mirrors that react to human movement, creating an abundance of light and color in a public space.
