Artists

Isamu Noguchi, Taro Okamoto
Isamu Noguchi and Taro Okamoto first met in 1950 at a welcoming party held for Noguchi a restaurant in Tokyo by a group of Japanese avant-garde artists. Each artist broke new ground as artists working in the West yet constantly gazing at Japanese culture- Noguchi, as a Japanese-American sculptor, who was constantly being pulled between two identities and Okamoto, as a Japanese artist overseas, who in his youth spent 10 years in Paris. Of the same generation, both of these unique artists were greatly influenced by Japanese art and left their respective marks on the post-war art scene. This exhibition examines “Japan” and “Japanese beauty” through the works of both of these different yet pioneering artists.
