Today women often wear hakama to their university graduations. This style of kimono rose to prominence in the Meiji through Showa eras and while popular as a type of clothing for female university students roughly 100 years ago, it retains its appeal even today. Hakama were also considered a “working woman’s” uniform and were sometimes used as a kind of genderless clothing. They transformed from Japanese to Western styles over a short time. Exploring the beauty and significance of hakama, this exhibition features paintings and illustrations by artists such as Yumeji Takehisa and Kasho Takabata that show women wearing hakama, as well as photographs and actual examples of them.
