Artists

Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita
Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita (1868 - 1944) created many distinctive woodcuts utilizing a variety of techniques. He was also a teacher of graphic design and woodblock printing in the Netherlands. He and his family were captured by Nazis and sent to death in a concentration camp. However, his former pupils, including Maurits Cornelis Escher, famed for his trompe-l’oeil art, did everything in their power to protect the works left in Mesquita’s home. This is the first exhibition in Japan to explore Mesquita’s art in detail.
