Sato Sakura Museum will be hosting an exhibition on Japanese painting entitled “Sky Pattern = Celestial Forms.” In autumn, the sky is less saturated with water vapor and it is harder for sunlight to be irregularly reflected, which gives the sky a brilliant clarity. For this reason, it has long been appreciated in Japan since ancient times that the clear azure sky, the setting sun, and the luminous moon in the night sky become even more stunning in autumn. As suggested by the saying that “the autumn sky shifts over 7.5 degrees,” the unpredictable weather in autumn is full of surprises; even if a clear sky is before you, a long spell of cold and rainy weather may not be far away. The sky is a common motif for artists when painting their works, and it has often been cited as the foundation of landscape painting. As a central element of their paintings, artists continue to depict the sky while giving thought to the work’s composition and technique. Through exploring the various “patterns of the sky” featured in contemporary Japanese painting, this exhibition allows visitors to enjoy a form of natural beauty that is traceable to ancient Japan.
