Finished

Artists

Haruya Nakajima, Yuta Akiyama, Tomotoshi
The Art Competition program, which awarded medals for top works of art, was held during seven Olympic Games from 1912 to 1948. Now Gallery Flesh, located in Gaienmae near where the Tokyo Games are to be held, in a building slated for demolition amid Olympic reconstruction, will hold its own Art Competition with three artists. Haruya Nakajima recreates the Olympic symbol with condoms as a message of caution and no-contact in these pandemic times. He also presents new works in a national flag series and footage of a pro-wrestling performance blending art and sport. Artist and architect Yuta Akiyama creates a new “scrap-and-build” style installation that will change over the course of the exhibition using fermented foods and soil, concrete, and a 3D printer. Tomotoshi, an artist who stages interventions in the city with his own body, shows video footage of transporting a pole vault from Saitama to the New National Olympic Stadium on the train. Don’t miss the Opening Ceremony gallery tour and talk to be held on July 24, when the 2020 Games were scheduled to open.
