The Amsterdam-based photographer Charlotte Dumas has been exploring the relationship between animals and contemporary society for 20 years in her portraits of cavalry horses, aid dogs, and other animals with close relationships to human beings. In 2014, she traveled to Japan to photograph indigenous horses in eight places across the country, including Hokkaido, Nagano, Miyazaki, and Yonaguni Island. In “Bezoar” she reconsiders interactions between animals and humans in three recent films and other works. A bezoar is a small stone that forms in the stomachs of some animals. According to old legends, bezoar are said to have mysterious protective qualities. Installations by textile designer Yuko Kitta and architects Keigo Kobayashi and Haruka Uemura are also featured.
