During his lifetime, Georges Rouault (1871-1958) enjoyed the acclaim of Japanese artists and art critics. Even today, 60 years after Rouault’s death, his works continue to attract a large audience in Japan. Through artworks and materials that mainly date from 1920 to today, the exhibition will explore how Rouault came to be so renowned and well-loved in Japan. Together, these items will demonstrate Rouault’s association with or influence on modern Japanese artists such as Ryuzaburo Umehara and Shunsuke Matsumoto, as well as the many commonalities between his works and Japanese art.
