The Tama Art University Museum will hold an exhibition that follows the footsteps of Okinawa-based artist Tsutomu Makishi (1941-2015). Maki created a style that portrays the contemporary era of Okinawa, while also incorporating neo-dada and pop-art techniques. He held solo exhibitions almost every year since the 1970s, and continued to present new work for about 50 years while belonging to no art group.
Through Makishi’s work it is possible to understand the social background of Okinawa as an island occupied by military bases during the long post-war era. On the other hand, Maki, who loved jazz, did not hide his longing for American culture. The expression that also includes the “complexity” brought about by various factors sway the viewer’s heart, sometimes with a dash of humor, and sometimes with overflowing emotion and tension.
This exhibition introduced about 90 works from the artist’s vast collection of work. This will be the first opportunity to see Makishi’s works collectively outside of Okinawa.
