Artists

Shohei Matsuda
Shohei Matsuda (1913-2004), a Western-style painter, was born in Shimane Prefecture and spent his childhood in Ube, Yamaguchi. After graduating from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music (now Tokyo University of the Arts), where Matsuda studied oil painting, he went to Paris on the eve of World War II to continue his studies. After returning to Japan, he continued his trial-and-error process in search of his own unique style of painting and eventually arrived at a transparent and delicate expression with multiple layers of thin paint. The collection of Shohei Matsuda at the Yamaguchi Prefectural Museum of Art was further enriched last year with the donation of more than 50 wonderful works.
