The Art of Kawai Gyokudo―A Master of Nihonga Whom Yamazaki Taneji Loved

Yamatane Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Gyokudo Kawai
Gyokudo Kawai (1873-1957) created richly lyrical paintings of Japan’s natural environment and its people’s manners and customs. The Yamatane Museum of Art presents a retrospective exhibition of seven decades of Kawai’s work. It traces Kawai’s path as an artist through a large number of magnificent works. It also focuses on people associated with Kawai, including museum founder Taneji Yamazaki, who supported him, mentors Gyokusen Mochizuki and Gao Hashimoto, and his student Kibo Kodama, introducing works and anecdotes that give a sense of their relationships.

*The Yamatane Museum of Art has shortened its opening hours and is using an online timed-entry reservation system (tickets for specific days and times) to prevent overcrowding, in addition to other measures to safeguard against COVID-19 so that visitors may view an exhibition comfortably.
