The title “The Sower” might make you recall Millet’s masterpiece or one of several works with the same name by van Gogh. Even if you’ve never seen these works, you’ve probably heard of them. Shigeru Hasegawa points out that while he also could have chosen “Sunflowers” or “The Scream,” “The Sower” felt more relevant to him since he has spent a long time in Holland painting fruits and vegetables. “There is nothing in particular I want to convey with my work,” he says. “I simply wanted to paint…I sample, analyze, and recompose motifs from classical Eastern and Western masterpieces.”
