Kazuo Kitai photographed political tensions and conflicts in Japan during the 1960s and 1970s before traveling across the country documenting its rapid economic development and fading scenes of rural life. Shin Yanagisawa, who started his career slightly before Kitai, photographed growing cities, snowy villages, and coastal towns across Japan. These black and white images by Kitai and Yanagisawa represent a slice of Japanese photography history.
