Tetsuo Miura
Tetsuro Miura was born in 1931 in Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture. After graduating from Waseda University, he published “Shinobu River” in 1960, which won the 44th Akutagawa Prize the following year, marking his debut on the literary scene. In his many stories, including his masterpiece “Byakuya wo Tabisuru Hito” (People Traveling in the White Night), he portrayed himself, his family, and the nameless common people, highlighting the harshness and comforts of life, and the sorrow and love of humanity. The world of his works, which he created as if he were carving each word, ranges from grand historical novels to serial novels, children’s literature, and essays.

His family has donated a number of valuable materials to the museum, including manuscripts of “Byakuya wo Tabisuru Hito” and “Shonen Sanka,” as well as letters to Miura from his lifelong mentor, Masuji Ibushi, which have been preserved in the Tetsuro Miura Collection. This exhibition will introduce Miura’s thoughts on literature and the appeal of his works by focusing on the materials in the collection and adding early materials that have never before been shown to the public, such as a manuscript recently discovered in a cottage in the Yatsugatake Mountains.
