Ukiyo-e Modern: Focusing Hashiguchi Goyo and Ito Shinsui

Machida City Museum of Graphic Arts
Finished

Artists

Goyo Hashiguchi, Shinsui Ito et al.
This exhibition focuses on the prints of Goyo Hashiguchi (1881–1921) and Shinsui Ito (1898–1972), both of whom had relationships with the Ukiyo-e artist Hasui Kawai (1883–1957). Hashiguchi and Ito both created what were called “new prints” using color and similar techniques as Ukiyo-e during the Taisho and early Showa eras. Their work went beyond the expressions of Ukiyo-e and into the realm of modern art while continuing the legacy of Ukiyo-e. Forty examples of their “Ukiyo-e Modern” works are on display.
