Teppei Ikehila
Teppei Ikehila’s paintings are filled with a variety of motifs, from sea creatures such as sharks and whales to lions, children, bright flowers, and pancakes. All of these are life, carefully added to the canvas one day at a time by a pure desire to paint. Ikehila never rejects the object he has visited that day, no matter how much it interferes with his previous compositions. The motifs scattered in the cloudless, brightly colored space are reconstructed and given new life.

In the new series introduced here, children appear frequently. Ikehila says that he had never painted many human figures before, but what brought about a change in him was undoubtedly the pandemic. As the relay of life that had continued as a matter of course until then was easily interrupted, the existence of children as a symbol of hope and the future was the first motif that came to mind. However, we cannot turn away from the fact that life has an end, no matter how beautiful it may be. Ironically, the only thing that reigns unshakably in this unstable world may be the concept of “death.

The artist’s view of the world is absorbed from his own daily experiences, and his paintings, while reaffirming the importance of life, are filled with a sense of comfort as if the clear air were gently blowing.
