Tao Shirokoma has been expanding the possibilities of his work by incorporating his own techniques and modernity into the technique of printmaking. The “hieroglyphs” used in the formation of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs and Chinese characters are a method of creating characters based on objects and phenomena. The complexity and multi-layered structure of the prints, the use of graphic software and laser processing, as well as the use of three-dimensional plate structures and highly decorative frames, all of which Shirokoma has named “digital woodblock printing,” allow him to constantly challenge new ways of expressing prints. This exhibition presents a series of works that apply the approach of printmaking in three dimensions.
