This event has ended.

In 2020, the National Ainu Museum opened in Shiraoi Town, Hokkaido. To commemorate the museum’s opening, the Shoto Museum of Art will introduce the clothing culture of the Ainu people.

First, the exhibition will examine the diversity of materials used in Ainu garments, such as kimono made from bark and grass fibers. It will also touch on the richness of Ainu designs through cotton garments decorated with various styles of embroidery, such as ruunpe (robes with embroidery and delicate applique) and kaparamip (cotton garments with embroidered pattems made from a large volume of white cloth). The exhibition will introduce Ainu special occasion attire, which feature gorgeous and unique pattems.
