This event has ended.

The “Illustrated Map of Myohoji Temple at Tomyoji Temple” in the collection of Tomyoji Temple (located in Yoshinogaricho) is an important cultural property dating from the late Kamakura period (1185-1333). It depicts Tomyoji Temple on the right side and the abandoned nunnery Myohoji Temple on the left side, with the Tate River in the center of the picture. This painting is a very valuable material for understanding the state of Tomyoji and other temples in the early days after its founding. However, due to the stains, folds, and insect damage that had occurred over the years, the painting was repaired in 2020.

In this exhibition, in addition to the repaired paintings, the wooden seated statue of Shakyamuni Buddha and the wooden standing statue of the Kannon, which are the main images of Tomyoji Temple and were repaired in 2019, will be on special display from September 7. This is one of the few opportunities to view cultural properties from the perspective of “repair”.
