・Selected Works of Western Modern Art
This section introduces excellent works of Western modern art from the museum’s collection and consignment. This section introduces two works newly acquired in the fiscal year 2020, Sonia Delaunay-Telk’s watercolor ‘Rhythm’ and Arshile Gorky’s drawing ‘Birthday Greeting,’ along with related works.
・Strange and Intriguing Japanese Paintings
People are fascinated by the beauty of detailed depiction and the skill of the artist, as in the case of pictures that look like photographs drawn with a single pencil, or crafts from the Meiji era that are called superbly crafted. On the other hand, it is also true that people are drawn to works that exude a mysterious charm. The exhibition “Fascinating Paintings” has been held in Osaka since July, introducing works with such a unique atmosphere, and the museum is exhibiting works by Kaijo Kusune. This corner introduces the works of the artists featured in the exhibition, as well as other mysterious works with different characteristics.
・Japanese Paintings of Living Things
Kyoto artists have painted many pictures of animals, and it is well known that the Kyoto Zoological Gardens played an important role in their production. The zoo, which opened in April 1903, was visited by Seiho Takeuchi, a famous master of the Kyoto art world, to sketch animals. His students Mugume Shida, Goun Nishimura, and Suizan Miki also painted creatures. Nishimura in particular used his masterful brushwork to depict lovely and lively creatures.
・The Prints of Kiyoshi Hasegawa
Kiyoshi Hasegawa, born in Yokohama in 1891, was a printmaker based in France. This exhibition features approximately 50 works from Hasegawa’s collection of approximately 180 works, including early woodblock prints and colorful oil paintings.
・Katsuzo Satomi and Japanese painters who studied in France
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the death of the Kyoto-born painter Katsuzo Satomi (1895-1981). This exhibition features works by Satomi and his companion Yuzo Saeki, as well as other painters who went to France at the same time, including Japanese painters.
