Seitei, Zeshin and Kyosai: Japanese Art at the Paris and Philadelphia Expositions
This event has ended.
As the 19th century witnessed the first wave of Euro-American globalization, Centennial Exhibitions grew in popularity and became a vehicle for various countries to showcase their culture and tradition.
Amidst the excess, three major Japanese artists took center stage: Seitei Watanabe, Zeshin Shibata, and Kyosai Kawanabe. Stunning Western audiences, their works were celebrated for their elegant aesthetics and attention to detail. Since then, their works have been continuously exhibited and have garnered much respect and attention from contemporary audiences in recent years. A rare unification of disparate works, this exhibition is a rare opportunity to collectively witness the works of three esteemed artists, who have and continue to stun audiences across many generations and cultures.
