Riko Monma “Slowscapes”

The Knot Tokyo Shinjuku
Finished

Artists

Riko Monma
This exhibition features the latest body of work by Riko Monma, a Japanese artist born and raised in New Zealand. The recurring theme in her paintings is the visualization of human emotion through an emphasis on subtle details, flowing forms, and earthy palettes. Her practice is a balance between application techniques and the natural physical properties of her media to create intricate and organic abstract paintings.

In her first solo exhibition, Monma explores how nature has played an important role in creating and characterizing ancient civilizations, as well as a country’s history and culture. By using the 200-year-old kakejiku framing style traditionally used to display religious art and calligraphy, and applying modern abstract painting techniques with Japanese pigments, Monma has created a new landscape that eases viewers into a space of quietness and safety. This combination of Japanese craftsmanship and contemporary abstract landscape painting doubles as an homage to her Japanese heritage and New Zealand upbringing.
