Musashino Art University is proud to present “The Realm of Clothing: On Conceptual Clothing” in its Art Reference Library.
The Scenography, Display, and Fashion Design department in the College of Art and Design was one of the first available courses at MAU. It has sought from its outset to establish the realm of clothing as a form of creative expression.
Since its inauguration in 1987, the department has invited modern-art creators from worldwide, in order to learn new ideas and methods from an adjacent discipline.
It was in the 1990s that the fusion/intermixing of art and fashion became a prevalent theme in museums throughout the world. Behind this development is the fact that fashion has emerged as a major social phenomenon alongside the maturation of industry and consumption.
This exhibition will present works by 11 designers and artists who explore new possibilities for clothing in this age.
