The Ueno Royal Museum invites visitors to enter the world of the wildly influential Sigmar Polke, the "alchemist of art".
Polke combines a variety of materials and techniques to incorporate motifs into his works to create profound abstract images. They range from everday subjects and fairy tales to history and war.

本展はドイツの画家、ジグマー・ポルケの日本初の個展である。1941年生まれのポルケは同世代のリヒター、キーファーらと並んで既に世界的に高い評価を得ているが、これまで日本でまとまった数の作品が公開されることはなかった。そうした意味で今回の展覧会は待望の個展ということになる。
私は絵を描かない（描けない）が、もし自分が美大の学生だったら、何か盗めないかと思って色めき立ったに違いない。そんなことを感じたのも、会場である上野の森美術館はVOCA展が開かれる場所だという印象が強くて、絵画（平面）作品の現在的な課題を教科書的に幅広く見渡すことができるVOCA展と、つい比べてしまったからである。
