Literary men of the Edo era who had studied the Chinese culture tried to capture the essence of an "ideal nature" on canvas and in poetry through communication with each other and intensive travel.
One of them was Chikuden Tanomura (1777-1835), who has produced numerous paintings and taught many disciples through repeated trips to Kyoto from his home town in Oita, Kyushu.
