Following the Art Nouveau movement that swept the world from the end of the 19th century, the 20th century Art Deco, a symbol of modernism, blossomed between the two World Wars, and swiftly spread worldwide with the development of transportation.
Art Deco hooked in on the decorative principles of Art Nouveau, but concurrently, it was also compatible with the then new paradigm of mass production - being more than just art, Art Deco exerted considerable influence on a wide array of disciplines, and even today its echo can be heard. We could even say that Art Deco was the starting point of our current lifestyle, mixing the artistic with the industrial.
"Art Deco 1910-1939" was originally displayed in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London (2003) and passed through Toronto in Canada and San Francisco and Boston in the USA before coming to Japan. The exhibition in Tokyo comes with a noteworthy extra though: in addition to the items displayed on previous occasions, it also features about two hundred Art Deco works that were produced in Japan.
"Art Deco 1910-1939" tries to shed a light on the origin and essence of Art Deco through paintings, sculptures, architecture, interiors, jewelry, fashion and pop culture from the second decade of the 20th century until the end of the interbellum.
