Kisaku Itoh
Kisaku Itoh began his career at the Tsukiji Theater where the Japanese modern plays were born. He designed the stage installation for a broad range of theaters including new drama, Kabuki, and dance. He also created many film, ballet and opera masterpieces as an art director.
The original sketches of his designs are organized in a "Book of the Sets" and have become significant historical materials of the 20th-century theater.
This exhibition presents 1,200 original sketches for about 300 plays together with the stage models, and also focuses on Kisaku's creative theory of the stage art and how the theory enabled his unique designs to be established in the history of the Japanese theater.
