Jean-Charles Blais "Empty Words"
This event has ended.
At Kenji Taki Gallery
Media: Graphics, Painting
A painting made with peeled off posters, objects created out of simple rags, video art...Jean-Charles Blais might be an experimenter, but his work is always centered around man and the human body.
In the 1980s, his early period, his art was characterized by magnitude: his images of man, enlarged to an almost hilarious extent, or the weighty feel of his support media, such as posters he had taken from the subway billboards, all knit together, in several thick layers...But as time passed, his work grew more and more abstract, and he began painting things like heads, overpainted in black, like a dark shadow. Last year, we saw new pieces, for which he used digital prints and videos of his own drawings, downsizing them, as though he wants to scrape off his early work's weighty feel and redefine his oeuvre once more. The result is less 'weight', more 'presence'.
