The Musee Fabre is located in Montpellier, a city that has flourished as a political and cultural center since the Middle Ages in France. This Museum was open to the public in 1828 on the basis of the collection of the painter, Francois-Xavier Fabre (1766-1837), after whom the museum was named. The Musee Fabre received numerous donations afterwards, and it became one of the most respected museums in France. It focuses mainly on French paintings.
It is the first time that its major works come to Japan together. 90 works by artists who come from Montpellier: Bourdon, Cabanel, and Bazille, and by major French artists such as Poussin, David, Delacroix, Millet will be shown in this exhibition.
