Chinese Art Now
This event has ended.
At Museum of Modern Art, Ibaraki
Media: Painting, Drawing, Prints
This event presents work, carefully selected from the winning pieces of China's largest public subscription exhibition called "All China Fine Arts". Since 1949, this exhibition is being held once every 5 years and has mirrored the rapid changes of Chinese society. The 2004 edition is what this event focuses on.
Needless to say, Chinese contemporary art is a mixture of traditional elements and Western influences. Yet, what makes this technically high-leveled art different from its Japanese counterpart, is its thematics; we see subjects that define the art work's place in time, like the People's Liberation Army or depictions of the working class people. The modern themes of course are somewhat different. With the coming of political stability and the permeation of capitalist thought, the nineties brought about accelerated modernization: cities are transformed into metropolises, youth culture blossoms, and for the first time urban problems become a topic of discussion.
A total of 95 works are on display: 35 Chinese-style paintings, 30 oil paintings, 11 prints, 10 watercolor paintings, 4 pieces of lacquer art, 2 'year-paintings', 1 'link-painting' and 2 manga. Welcome to a new and diversified China.
