Yoshimasa Tsuchiya Sculpture Exhibition
This event has ended.
At Gallery Naruyama
Media: Sculpture
Tsuchiya's sculptural works, which try to embody a power beyond the reach of humans in the form of delicacies of life, look so silent and divine that they catch people off guards. For example, Tsuchiya's imaginary chrysanthemum reflects the changing weather conditions on its own petals, and his imaginary deer reflects the blue lake on its pupils.
Tsuchiya has been attracted by the notion of artificial selection (as opposed to Natural Selection), which enables us to control and produce natural elements (flowers for example) that would never survive or exist naturally. In Japan, artificial selection has long been conducted actively for the purpose of sharing and preserving the "beautiful" found in the nature. Some cared-for "forms" have been successfully reproduced from a generation to the next, and others have died out. Tsuchiya thinks that the fact that one life cannot continue or happen without the help of others is not "miserable" but elegant and powerful.
