Australian Film Festival, 2006 Australia-Japan Year of Exchange
This event has ended.
At National Film Center
Media: Film, Art Talk
In collaboration with the Australia Film Commision, the National Film Center will hold this film festival as a celebration of the 2006 Australia-Japan Year of Exchange, which commemorates the 30th anniversary of the signing of the 1976 Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Australia and Japan. With 24 programs and 41 films, it will be the largest festival to focus on Australian films in Japan.
To highlight the history of Australian film, the festival is divided into three categories:
1. Silent films
Representative films from this era will be screened with live music, made possible by the cooperation of National Film and Sound Archives in Canberra.
2. Australian Film Rennaissance
Following a stagnant period after the war, a new generation of directors, led by Peter Wier and Phillip Noyce reestablished the industry. Representative works from the 1970s-early 80s will be screened.
3. 1990s to the present day
Excellent films from the post-rennaisance to the present day will be screened.
All of the movies were selected in accordance with the following themes:
1. The inclusion of themes of Japan-Australian relations and history
2. The illustration of contemporary Australian society as a multi-cultural nation
3. Issues relating to Aboriginees
4. Female directors
5. Animation
