At Ota Memorial Museum of Art
Media: Painting, Prints

In commemoration of the 200th Anniversary of Utamaro's Death and 250th anniversary of Eisho's Birth.
At the end of the 18th century, Utamaro Kitagawa became famous for his vivid and bold portrayals of women in Ukiyoe. Along with Hokusai Katsushika, he is one of the world-famous Japanese artists to date.
Meanwhile, another artist reknown for his ukiyoe of beautiful women is Utamaro's rival, Eishi Choubunsai, who surprisingly was also once a samurai. His sophisticated and elegant depictions of women gained similar acclaim.
This exhibition features the works of Utamaro and Eishi - rivals from the same era - along with a selection of works from other artists of Edo. Enjoy the exquisite female beauties and the distinct Edo sensibilities that exude from their pictures.

* Approx 130 exhibited works. The works will change entirely in the second half of the exhibition.
First half : September 1st - 26th
Second half: October 1st - 26th
