The history of modern art in the 20th century starts at the end of the 19th, when fauvism emerged to replace impressionism. It was the birth of a new age with various new ways of expression. This exhibition of paintings from the Lille Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art, in Villeneuve d'Ascq in northern France, displays works by the cubist Picasso and members of the Montparnasse circle- Modigliani, of course, but also cool canvasses of representative 20th-century painters like Braque, Léger, Kandinsky and Miró.

チラシからピカソとモディリアーニの作品がメインの展覧会なのかと思いきや、20世紀初頭から現代につながる芸術運動の流れを回顧する内容で、純粋に学習意欲を刺激された。というか、アツく、美術とは、芸術とは、という根底部分を問い直し続ける美術家たちというのは、どこの国にも存在したんだなあ。。。と、彼らの姿勢を近代日本美術会のとリンクさせてみたり。
純粋に作品にうっとりするもよし、アカデミックな客観性を持って鑑賞するもよし、おばちゃんから若いひとまで足を運べる展覧会の典型というかんじ。それにしても、モディリアーニの波乱に満ちた生涯は必ず展覧会レビューに言及されている。
