Eikoh Hosoe is a representative contemporary Japanese photographer who is also famous overseas. His well-known works include "Man and Woman", "Bara-kei", "Embrace", "Kamaitachi", "Gaudi's Space" and "Luna Rossa". A large-scale private exhibition of his has been showing at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography since December 8th, 2006.

While Hosoe has mainly produced silver-salt prints, representative works such as "Bara-kei", "Embrace" and "Kamaitachi" have been produced in platinum print (also known as the 'eternal print' method). He has also been especially interested in traditional printing methods such as manual gravure printing in the past, in order to create high-quality photo books and portfolios.

From the birth of photography in the 19th century to the 'age of images' in the 20th century, many historic records and art works have been produced through the development of photographic equipment and techniques. This is also when the photographic trend shifted from daguerreotype and platinum prints to silver-salt prints. This shift in technique is further accelerating in the 21st century, whereby film and silver-salt prints is changing to digital photography. By reexamining printing techniques in this era of change, Hosoe is breathing new life into his previous works.

This exhibition selects works from his long career which especially showcase various printing techniques. The approximately 30 exhibited works range from daguerreotypes, papyrus digital pigment prints, platinum prints, gum prints, minigraph, manual gravure prints, collotype prints, and so on.
