It is thought that the Hina Festival was originally held in ancient China, and that it was the origin of rituals held by the waterside to purify people against uncleanness or natural disasters. This was transferred to Japan in around the 7th Century, and as a seasonal festival held on 3rd March it became an annual event at the Emperor's Court in the Heian Period.
The Hina Festival flourished in the Edo Period, particularly in the final years of the Tokugawa Shogunate, and many of these Hina ornaments and dolls, which capture a frozen sense of beauty and extravagance, were made during that time. With the cooperation of Toraya, this exhibition will show 300 Hina dolls and ornaments from the late Tokugawa Period through to the Meiji Period. Included in the display will be some extremely rare examples of small silver ornaments, on show to the public for the first time.
