In 1912 in Munich, Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) and Franz Marc (1880-1916) first published the art magazine "Der Blaue Reiter" which had a great impact on art movements all around Europe. The ideas at the heart of German Expressionism were supported by the will for "integration", the unification of primitive art and craft with contemporary art, the unification of art and music, art and society - thoughts which later formed the basis of the Bauhaus ideology. They talked about the "inner necessity" that exists within the structure of art, and they looked into the spiritual meaning of expression in modernity. Der Blaue Reiter's scope of activity was not limited to being a mere publication, it invited domestic and foreign artists to hold exhibitions and its existence was strongly felt in the European art scene of the time. With the outbreak of World War One in 1914, the publication inevitably came to an end, but its ideas continued to have an important influence on the development of contemporary art thereafter. With this being the "German Year in Japan", by looking mainly at print works made by the "Der Blaue Reiter" artists, this exhibition aims to get an insight into its activities at the start of the 20th century.
