This event has ended.
At Yayoi Museum
Media: Illustration, Painting, Other
This retrospective exhibition is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of illustrator Tatsumi Shimura (1907-1980).
Shimura studied Japanese paintings under Hidemine Yamakawa and gained fame for providing illustrations for the "Tange Sazen" series by Fubo Hayashi. Shimura, along with Sentaro Iwata and Hidetsune Kobayashi, forged the way for a golden era of book illustration before and after the war. In his later years, he devoted himself to Japanese paintings and pursued the art of 'bijinga' (paintings of beautiful women).
This exhibition will display over 500 works of illustrations, Japanese paintings, sketches, photography, and other reference material to offer a full view of Simura's 55 years as an artist.
