Etiye Dimma Poulsen, a Danish sculptor of Ethiopian heritage is having her first exhibition in Japan. Born in Ethiopia in 1968, Poulsen spent her childhood in East Africa in Tanzania and Kenya until she settled in Denmark in 1982. After she studied art in school, she moved to France in 1991 where she started making ceramic sculptures.
Her statues are structured with iron mesh, covered with clay and color is added using a traditional approach. Poulsen has invented an elegant prototype that differs from the traditional African sculptural style using peculiar cracks and coloring.
