Tokyo Photography Month: Asian Photographers - India

Manipur is a small state in India's east, far from the centre of the country, defined by a large mountain belt occupying half of its area and a long border with Myanmar.

This state, which has an independence movement that wishes to break away from India, has seen repeated clashes between the government's armed forces and the local anti-government militias - clashes that have claimed many victims. The notion of identity is very important to the people who live there, and yet many of them conceal their identities by covering their faces, such as male rickshaw pullers. On the other hand, the socially disadvantaged women of that state have also bravely formed a movement that seeks liberation from this system of identification.

This exhibition is a documentation of the battle for liberation being fought by people who want to find solutions to the problems created by Manipur's system of identification.
