Yutaka Nishimura "Yamane the Forest Fairy"
This event has ended.
At Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts
Media: Photography, Art Talk
Yamane, a species indigenous to Japan, belong to the dormouse family and are about 12 centimeters long from head to tail. They live in the forests of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu, are nocturnal, and spend most of their lives in trees. This artist and nature photographer had his first encounter with Yamane at Yatsugatake Mountain in early summer, 1977. Since then, he has spent 20 years taking photographs of these creatures that are difficult to spot. He has created a rare recording of the their lives, including their humorous and cute movements, eating habits, and how they nurture their young. These animals are designated as a national natural monument, and are a symbol of nature to those that live in and around the Yatsugatake Mountains. It's time to take another look at Yamane, keeping in mind environmental issues and the rules that humans should abide by as we coexist with animals and nature. Approximately 90 works will be on display in this exhibition including some from the museum's collection.
