Tetsuya Ishida was born in 1973, studied as a high school student in Shizuoka and went to Musashino Art University, following which he made his artistic debut in Tokyo. In May 2005 he was in a car accident on a railroad crossing in the Machida area and was killed. Following NHK's introduction of his work on its program "Nichiyo Bijutsukan", he has become a very popular with people. Ishida's paintings are filled with experiences from his life, but they retain a sense of unreality to them. However, his self-portraits also come across as a bitter critique of the importance of individual human rights, problems with education, and controlled nature of Japanese society. In a contemporary Japan that suffers from youth crime and murders of elementary school children, Ishida's paintings take these problems and give expression to them on the canvas: a reflection of the "pain and sadness" that lurks in contemporary people.
