Maria Lind was born in Stockholm in 1966. Since 2005 she has been the Director of IASPIS (International Artist Studio Program in Sweden) in Stockholm. From 2002 to 2004 she was the Director of Kunstverein Munchen, where she worked with a number of curators to realize numerous projects, workshops and exhibitions which explored new and different formats for how an art center could operate. Along with a number of other curators and artists working mainly in Europe throughout the 1990s, Maria Lind has been credited as being one of the key curators of what is currently referred to as 'New Institutionalism' (see Frieze Issue 101, September 2006) and she is known for questioning the role and practice of the curator today. As the nature of and audience for contemporary art shifts and museums compete with ever diversifying forms of entertainment, what is the role of art institutions today? Can they offer critical or alternative modes of encountering and understanding art? Maria Lind will discuss these issues through her experiences working at various art centers, biennales and projects.
The talk will be in English with consecutive translation into Japanese.
