At Nishimura Gallery
Media: Painting

The artist, who was born in Tokyo in 1960 and graduated from the Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts in 1986, started painting submarines as reflections of himself in such works as 'Alone' and 'Hard Shell'. For Kobayashi, a submarine symbolized a shell in which he could defend himself from society, and the lonely submarines in bleak scenery in his early works are insistent and express a strong will. In 1995, the Art Tower Mito, Ibaraki showed Kobayashi's new paintings of dogs and water fountains in the sunshine and these works were highly acclaimed. The next year, he was awarded the VOCA'96 Encouragement Prize and he held his first solo exhibition at Nishimura Gallery. Since 1999 he has been living and working in Bangkok and Tokyo, painting daily objects such as dishes or car lights inspired by his life in Bangkok. Since then, the main subjects of his works have also gradually been changing to humans. His works entitled 'Dream, dreaming of us,' 'Small death' and 'Sunbather' depicted sleeping people. Last year, Nishimura Gallery exhibited his latest works of human faces, which convey a universal sense of existence. Now, his new work of a sleeping man like Buddha, with a canvas over 5 meters, can be seen in the inaugural exhibition "Vital Signs- Reality of nine contemporary artists" at the Yokosuka Museum of Art.

This exhibition reveals the artist's serious attitude toward all works and will give insight into the universal spiritual theme in his works. 30 works including the newest, a painting of a woman's face with glasses will be on display. The 'Submarine' paintings are exhibited at the gallery for the first time.

どの作品も明るく、優しく、素朴で良かったです。

普通のリンゴやお墓に備えられた菊の花が
なぜかとても温かく感じられ、魅入ってしまいました。

小林氏の作品が好きな方なら楽しめると思います。
